What's the best way of protecting myself from ID theft (you know, where somebody uses my personal information to set up credit, and then uses that to take advances or buy things for their personal benefit)?

CU Dude,

To start, shred or store securely your credit card statements, purchase receipts and anything else that has your account number printed. I would consider subscribing to a credit monitoring service as well.

Has anyone used one of the monitoring services now offered by the credit reporting agencies?  Some of them are expensive, but that cost might be worthwhile if it helps prevent someone from stealing my identity.

I actually use Credit Expert, a service that monitors your Experian credit report.  I find it very useful, in that I can view my credit report and credit score at any time.  It also monitors my credit report for new inquiries and changes, and alerts me via e-mail if there is anything that I should be aware of.  You might want to check it out: www.creditexpert.com.  The price is a little steep, but I feel that it is a small price to pay for peace of mind!

I think the best way to protect your credit is only available in California for a limited time, depends on what gets passed in federal legislation.  There is pending legislation to get rid of the states laws so it makes it easier on credit bureaus.

California residents can do a credit freeze, which basically restricts credit report access from anyone unless you give them explicit permission to do so. You need to do this individually at all three credit bureau companies.  Check www.bankrate.com search for Amy C. Fleitas article on "credit freeze".

Costs $$ if you are not an identity theft victim but well worth it. No one but you can change the address on the credit bureau records. You will also have a PIN to change any personal info with the credit bureau.  Next time someone applies for credit in your name it will show up blank and "frozen" and the imposter will be busted!
